Working With Brisbane City Council

Brisbane's civic precinct—anchored by City Hall and surrounded by heritage buildings—is the city's institutional and symbolic heart. The council wanted to elevate this precinct as an evening destination by highlighting its architectural heritage through thoughtful lighting design. The challenge: heritage buildings deserve respectful treatment, and civic spaces need lighting that reflects their importance without spectacle. We designed an architectural lighting strategy across six major civic buildings: warm accent lighting on facades (3000K colour temperature), subtle uplighting on key architectural features, and ground-level pathway lighting that guided pedestrian movement without overwhelming the facades. City Hall got the primary focus: intelligent colour-mixing fixtures positioned on temporary rigs to accent the building's key architectural features—the dome, the colonnades, the heritage stonework. We avoided harsh direct light, preferring subtle uplighting that revealed character without creating harsh shadows. The secondary civic buildings got coordinated but lighter approaches. The brief was visual coherence (so the precinct felt unified) but architectural diversity (so each building's unique character remained visible). By November, the civic precinct had transformed from a daytime-only institutional space into a genuine evening destination. Visitors lingered, photographers discovered new compositions, and the evening character of the city's civic heart became something to celebrate rather than ignore. The council realized that architectural lighting wasn't decoration—it was placemaking infrastructure that changed how communities perceived and used their civic spaces.
