Working With Brisbane City Council
Night markets are Brisbane's answer to evening entertainment. Food vendors, craft stalls, live performance, casual gathering. The council runs monthly markets across multiple locations. The challenge: lighting needs to support vendors (so customers can see product), create atmosphere (so people linger), and be cost-effective (so the council can run regular programming). We designed a modular market lighting kit: 24x warm LED uplights, 16x ambient pathway lights, and a simple power distribution system. The kit could be deployed at any location and set up in under 90 minutes. The warm colour palette (2700K) created inviting atmosphere without the harshness of commercial lighting. By November, the night markets had become Brisbane's premier evening activation. The council ran markets every Friday night across three locations, rotating the equipment between sites. Vendor feedback was consistent: the lighting elevated the market experience, attendees lingered longer, and sales exceeded daytime market performance. The real win was the infrastructure enabling consistent programming. Good lighting transformed night markets from occasional experiments into reliable summer programming that communities anticipated and planned around.
