Maclean, a town with deep Scottish heritage, hosts an exceptional Highland Gathering and Tartan Festival that celebrates the Scottish cultural traditions central to the community's identity. Bagpipes, traditional dancing, Scottish athletics, crafts, and community celebrations create an authentically cultural event that brings the Scottish diaspora together while introducing visitors to Maclean's distinctive heritage. When Clarence Valley Council developed plans for the 2026 Highland Gathering, professional lighting design emerged as essential to creating the celebratory atmosphere appropriate to this genuinely significant cultural event.

Cultural festivals deserve lighting design reflecting their significance. The Maclean Highland Gathering isn't a generic community festival but a genuine celebration of Scottish heritage and community identity. Lighting should be respectful of that cultural importance while creating the inviting, celebratory atmosphere that supports community gathering and cultural participation. We designed comprehensive systems that honoured the festival's cultural meaning while enabling professional-grade event production.

The main gathering area and outdoor performance space benefited from warm festoon overhead creating traditional festival atmosphere. Warm light references the heritage character of Scottish celebrations—it creates the intimate, social gathering environment that encourages community participation and connection. The lighting creates visual reference to traditional festival atmosphere while serving modern event production needs.

The stage lighting for traditional dance and bagpipe performances required particular care. Scottish traditional music and dance are visually and auditorily complex. Performers need adequate stage lighting and visibility; audiences need to appreciate both movement and cultural authenticity. We used intelligent wash lighting that provided brightness and colour support without overwhelming the visual character of traditional performances. Professional stage lighting respects cultural performance dignity.

The Scottish athletics arena required bright, functional illumination for competitions and demonstrations. Traditional events—caber toss, stone put, Highland dance competitions—need clear visibility for fair judging and spectator appreciation. We used intelligent wash rigs positioned to eliminate shadows and provide professional competition-grade lighting. Athletic performance deserves proper visibility and lighting support.

The craft and merchandise areas needed practical brightness for vendor operations while maintaining warm, inviting social atmosphere.
