Working With Gold Coast City Council

The Tallebudgera Valley Arts Festival draws thousands of visitors and craft vendors to sprawling park venue. Gold Coast City Council needed lighting feeling warm, inviting, and safe without overwhelming the natural bushland setting. We designed a distributed lighting system framing pathways and vendor areas while respecting landscape character. Unlike single-focus events, festivals demand flexibility. Vendor stalls need practical task lighting. Pathways need wayfinding illumination. Performance areas need brighter coverage. Seating zones need gentle ambient light. All zones had to work independently and harmonise visually. We installed festoon stringing along pathways and vendor rows, creating warm canopy feeling organic to the setting. Uplighting on key trees added depth without feeling installed or artificial. Pathway ground-level lighting was subtle and non-glaring, using low-angle LED units defining edges without dark shadows. Vendor compliance was important. Some stalls operated their own displays. We provided Council with guidance on safe auxiliary lighting standards so vendors could enhance booths without creating hazards. Power distribution was distributed too. Rather than one massive generator, we positioned multiple smaller units throughout the park, minimizing cable runs and visual clutter. Each zone operated semi-independently. Weather resilience mattered. Bushland weather is unpredictable. All equipment was IP-rated for outdoor conditions and secured against wind loading. Council staff had simple controls to adjust lighting if weather changed. The real magic? Visitors had no sense of lighting design. They arrived after dark, walked through warm welcoming pathways, enjoyed vendor displays that were clearly visible, felt safe and oriented, and never thought about infrastructure. That's professional festival lighting—invisible in the best way. Tallebudgera Valley Arts Festival became a signature event for Gold Coast City Council, and lighting design played a genuine role in that success.
