Working With Gold Coast City Council

Southport Town Hall is a heritage gem with iconic architecture and historical significance. Gold Coast City Council wanted to feature the building as a civic landmark without compromising heritage integrity. We designed subtle facade lighting defining architectural features and creating visual focus for council events. Heritage buildings demand respect. Heavy uplighting or aggressive colour washes would be inappropriate. We specified low-colour-temperature LED units (2700K warm white) positioned at ground level to gently define the building's facade without overwhelming stonework or architectural detail. The challenge was preventing glare at street level. Pedestrians needed to see the building clearly, but we couldn't create eye-level light sources that were uncomfortable. We used diffusion, precise angle control, and complementary pathway lighting to create visual hierarchy without discomfort. Council events held in and around Town Hall became more memorable with intelligent facade lighting. Civic ceremonies, community announcements, and public gatherings had sense of occasion created by thoughtful illumination. The building became a backdrop elevating events rather than competing with them. We coordinated with Council heritage officers to ensure all mounting systems and cables were reversible and non-damaging. The building's heritage status meant every decision was documented and approved before installation. Power access at Town Hall was straightforward. We created discrete cable runs that were either concealed or professional-looking enough that they didn't distract from the facade. Permanent infrastructure meant the system stayed in place and Council could activate it remotely for events. The result? Southport Town Hall became a visual anchor for the civic precinct. Locals noticed the building differently. Visitors understood they'd arrived at a place of significance. That's what thoughtful heritage lighting achieves.
