Working With Gold Coast City Council

Southport Public Library hosts community events, author talks, exhibitions, and formal functions. Gold Coast City Council wanted lighting supporting the library's educational mission while creating professional atmosphere. We designed an integrated system working for intimate gatherings and larger public functions. The library's existing lighting was institutional and unflattering. We recommended supplementary event lighting deployable for specific functions without permanently altering the space. Portable festoon stringing, uplighting on feature walls, and accent lighting for exhibition areas gave Council flexibility. The brief was clear: professional, subtle, respectful of the library's cultural purpose. Nothing theatrical or aggressive. Lighting should enhance, not dominate. We specified warm white colour temperatures (3000K) and soft diffusion creating scholarly but inviting atmosphere. Exhibition lighting was particularly important. Libraries host art exhibitions and historical displays. Proper lighting is non-negotiable for fair artwork presentation. We designed portable LED units with colour-accurate 95+ CRI rendering. Event space versatility mattered. Formal functions demand professional presentation lighting. Casual author talks need practical illumination. We created modular systems so Council could configure spaces for different event types. Access and teardown were critical. Library staff needed to deploy and remove lighting without expertise. We created simple, secure mounting systems and colour-coded cables. Power access in the library was limited. We worked with Council facilities to identify safe, discreet power routing that didn't create hazards. Permanent infrastructure included weathered-aesthetic power boxes. The real win? The library became a genuine community event venue. Council reported increased bookings for private functions, more author events, and stronger community engagement. Lighting design played a real part.
