Working With Gympie Regional Council

The Mary Valley is Gympie's heritage heartland: historic railway, heritage buildings, and community significance. Gympie Regional Council wanted to activate the heritage precinct for evening community events and heritage celebrations without modernist architectural lighting that would clash with the historic character. We designed a sympathetic, historically-informed lighting approach: warm LED uplighting (2200K, very warm amber) on heritage buildings, positioned to accentuate the architecture's character and period detail rather than wash it with generic light. Ground-level pathway lighting (3000K, low intensity) for safe wayfinding without dominating the streetscape. The challenge was respecting the heritage aesthetic while creating genuine functional lighting for evening events. We achieved this by using low colour temperatures, high colour rendition (so the heritage buildings' original materials and colours were flattered, not distorted), and carefully positioned fixtures that felt like extensions of the landscape rather than imposed infrastructure. By January 2026, three evening heritage events had been hosted in the Mary Valley, attracting both locals and heritage tourism visitors. Attendee feedback highlighted the "thoughtfully lit" atmosphere that made the heritage character *more* apparent under lighting rather than diminished. Gympie Regional Council is now positioning the Mary Valley as a heritage tourism destination with evening event capability, which drives broader regional visitation and supports local hospitality and small business.
