Redcliffe is a beachside suburb with serious water-views potential. The foreshore is beautiful but underactivated. The council wanted to change that by running the Redcliffe Festival—three days of music, food, arts, and community programming. The catch: much of it needed to happen at night. That meant beachfront lighting at scale. When the council briefed us on the Redcliffe Festival, the brief was to create a cohesive lighting environment across three kilometres of foreshore without making it feel like the beach had been colonised by a festival. That's the challenge of beachfront events: you're working with water-views, heritage landscapes, residential properties nearby, and significant ambient light from the town. Get it wrong and you've ruined the beach. Get it right and you've created a destination. We started by understanding the existing ambient light. Redcliffe has street lighting along the foreshore but it's old and inconsistent. We proposed an overlay: warm LED pathways along the entire accessible foreshore (about 2.5 km), creating a continuous sense of activation without harsh intensity. We paired that with distributed stage lighting at the three main performance areas (Redcliffe Jetty, Settlement Cove, and the main beachfront stage) so each zone could host simultaneous programming with its own identity. The Redcliffe Jetty performance area was the complex one—it's a heritage structure extending into the water, with residential properties immediately behind. We couldn't just rig massive stage lighting. We designed a subtle approach: intelligent colour-mixing fixtures mounted on the jetty itself, low intensity so the performance was visible to the audience but the light didn't spill into the homes behind. We added water-facing uplighting on the pilings so the jetty itself became a visual anchor at night. Settlement Cove got a full beachfront stage rig: proper stage lighting, audience illumination, and adjacent ambient lighting for the food and merchandise areas. The main beachfront area got distributed festoon lighting draped between the heritage palm trees, creating an evening atmosphere that made the beach feel like a destination even when performances weren't running. The festival ran over three days in late October. By the evening of day one, the foreshore was absolutely heaving—families, couples, groups of friends, locals who hadn't used the beach for evening activities in years. The lighting had transformed Redcliffe from a daytime beach destination into a genuine evening event space. By November, the council had already committed to running the festival annually and had budgeted for permanent beachfront lighting infrastructure. They realized that the festival lighting had unlocked commercial potential—restaurants and bars were seeing evening trade they'd never experienced before. The real lesson: beachfront communities have evening potential that sits dormant until you give people a reason to be there. The lighting is that reason. Once it's in place, the community fills in naturally.
