Laguna Lookout Community Events & Sunset Gathering Lighting

Working With Noosa Shire Council
Laguna Lookout is a scenic overlook hosting community events, council ceremonies, and casual gatherings. By dusk, it went dark, limiting evening event potential. Noosa Shire Council wanted to create evening ambience that felt safe and intentional without overwhelming the natural landscape. We designed a minimal intelligent lighting rig: six LED fixtures positioned to light the main gathering area, pathways, and overlook platform, with warm colour temperature (3000K) and dimmable intensity so the system could adapt from day-event support (low light integration) to evening-event primary lighting (higher intensity). The fixtures were mounted on existing infrastructure (poles, existing structure), so zero permanent new installations were required. The clever element: we programmed the system with a sunset-adaptive feature, so as the sun dips below the horizon, the lights gradually increase intensity from 20% to 80% over 45 minutes, matching the natural light transition. At dusk transitions, participants don't experience a jarring shift from natural to artificial—the light intensity and colour temperature shift seamlessly. By January 2026, five community events had been scheduled at Laguna Lookout in the evening (previously, all events finished before 4 PM). Revenue from evening event bookings covered the lighting system's cost in a single season. Noosa Shire Council now considers Laguna Lookout a viable evening venue, which increases the region's total available event infrastructure and drives overall tourism and local business activity.
