Noosa River Parkland is underutilised for evening events despite its natural beauty and waterfront setting. Noosa Shire Council wanted to activate the space with a flexible lighting solution that would encourage evening community gatherings, outdoor dining, and council events without overengineering the natural landscape. We designed a modular intelligent lighting rig: ten LED fixtures positioned to light the main parkland gathering area, waterfront pathways, and accent native trees and water views. The system was networked on DMX with remote control capability, allowing us to adapt the lighting in real-time for different event types. The colour strategy was critical: we locked the system to warm colour temperatures (3000K ambient, 2200K accent uplighting on trees) so the parkland felt natural and inviting rather than artificially lit. High intensity would be saved for scheduled events; default state was ambient, low-intensity lighting that made the space feel inhabited without overwhelming it. By mid-January 2026, the parkland had hosted three community events that previously couldn't have occurred (they would have finished before dark). Attendance and vendor feedback were uniformly positive: people felt safe, the space felt intentional, and the atmosphere encouraged lingering rather than transience. Noosa Shire Council is now integrating the River Parkland into their standard event venue offerings, which increases the council's total available infrastructure and creates opportunity for sustainable growth in evening event activations across the region.
