Working With Redland City Council

Redland City's Bayside Festival is the region's signature event—multiple locations across the island beaches, water activities, entertainment, food, and community gathering. The council wanted the festival to feel cohesive across multiple sites while respecting each location's unique character. That meant coordinated but differentiated lighting across Point Lookout, Northern Beaches, and the secondary sites. When we designed the festival lighting strategy, we visited every proposed site and understood the geography, existing infrastructure, and community character. Point Lookout is dramatic and scenic—headland with water views. Northern Beaches are more suburban and family-focused. The secondary sites ranged from parkland to town centres. We created a unified lighting language across all sites: warm colour palettes (2700K–3000K), modular rigs that could be assembled and struck efficiently, and DMX control systems so every site could be programmed independently but sequenced together. The brief was that every location should feel part of the same festival experience, but each should be authentically tailored to its community. Point Lookout got the most sophisticated rig: intelligent colour-mixing fixtures positioned to accent the headland's drama while maintaining sightlines to the water, stage lighting for entertainment areas, and pathway lighting through the scenic areas. The emphasis was on making the landscape feel enhanced, not overwhelmed. Northern Beaches got more ambient, family-friendly lighting: distributed LED pathways, warm accent lighting on the beach and foreshore, and stage lighting for performances. The emphasis was on warmth, accessibility, and inviting lingering. The secondary sites got smaller but similarly thoughtful approaches: market lighting in town centres, pathway lighting through parks, and stage support wherever performances were scheduled. The festival ran over four weekends in October and November. The attendance was strong across all locations, but the evening programming—which hadn't been viable in previous years—drew crowds and extended the festival's reach. Restaurants and hospitality businesses across the island reported increased evening trade. Families who traditionally did daytime festival activities started coming in the evening because the lighting made evening programming feel safe and intentional. By late November, the council had already committed to running the Bayside Festival with even more evening programming in 2026. They'd realized that the lighting infrastructure had essentially doubled the festival's appeal by making evening activity viable. The real lesson: island communities with water views have extraordinary evening potential if you give people the infrastructure to enjoy it. Thoughtful lighting that respects the landscape and supports community activity transforms waterfront communities from daytime destinations into 24-hour cultural hubs.
