Working With Redland City Council

Island Christmas is different from urban Christmas. Stradbroke Island and the Northern Beaches communities want festive feeling, but they also want their natural beauty respected. The council wanted to create Christmas magic across the islands without imposing urban-style commercial decoration. When we designed the island Christmas lighting for 2025, the challenge was clear: create genuinely festive atmosphere while maintaining the beachside character. That meant careful site selection, restricted colour palettes, and integration with the natural landscape rather than replacement of it. We started by identifying focal points on each island: the main towns (Dunwich, Point Lookout), key gathering spaces, and natural features that could be highlighted. We chose to focus our lighting investment on a few key locations rather than spreading it thinly across many sites. Point Lookout got beachfront festoon lighting draped through the existing vegetation, creating a warm golden canopy effect. The foreshore got distributed LED pathway lighting in warm 2700K. We added subtle accent lighting on the headland to create visual interest without overwhelm. The result: the beach felt festive but still felt like itself. Dunwich's main street got warm festoon lighting across the shopping precinct, intelligent fixtures positioned to accent heritage buildings, and distributed ambient lighting through the town centre. The brief was to make the town feel celebratory without looking like it had been taken over by Christmas decoration. The secondary beach communities got lighter approaches: festoon in key areas, pathway lighting for safety and atmosphere, and minimal accent lighting. The emphasis was distributed feeling of celebration rather than concentrated commercialism. The islands' natural character—vegetation, water views, quieter pace—was respected throughout. We deliberately avoided cool-white "commercial" Christmas lighting. Everything was warm, subtle, and integrated. By mid-November, the islands were drawing day-tripper and overnight-visitor numbers that exceeded the council's projections. Hospitality businesses reported higher bookings. The island communities felt the season was present without being overwhelmed by imported urban decoration. The council asked an interesting question at debrief: "Why does island Christmas feel different and more special than city Christmas?" The answer is that the lighting was designed to reveal and enhance the islands' existing character, not impose external style. The result: Christmas felt like it belonged there. By late November, the council had committed to repeating the island Christmas lighting annually with potential expansion to more locations. They'd realized that respectful lighting design creates more meaningful celebration than aggressive decoration. The real lesson: coastal and island communities have their own character. Festive lighting works best when it respects that character and reveals it, rather than trying to transform it. When you light thoughtfully, you create celebration that feels authentic to place, not imported from elsewhere.
