Evans Head sits at the mouth of the Richmond River on the NSW north coast—a genuine fishing village with deep maritime heritage and vibrant sport and lifestyle community. The Evans Head Fishing Classic and associated Malibu Surfing Classic celebrate the region's coastal culture. These are authentically water-centric festivals where competition happens during daylight but the social, celebratory dimension extends deep into evening. When Richmond Valley Council approached us about lighting design for these combined waterfront festivals, we understood immediately—Evans Head's waterfront character required lighting that honored the maritime heritage while transforming beachfront and river precinct areas into genuinely inviting evening spaces.

Waterfront festival lighting presents specific challenges and opportunities. Water reflects light beautifully, which allows for elegant, minimal fixture design. Wind is more pronounced on exposed coastal locations. Salt air requires high-quality, corrosion-resistant equipment. The fishing classic needed bright, functional illumination of competition zones, weigh-in areas, and boat launch facilities. The broader festival required warm, inviting lighting across gathering and dining spaces. We designed layered solutions that served both functional competition needs and social celebration atmosphere.

The main wharf and fishing competition areas needed bright, reliable illumination. Competitive fishing requires accurate weight measurement, documentation, and photographic evidence of catch size and quality. Evening competitions depend on proper lighting that gives officials and participants the visibility they need. We used intelligent wash lighting positioned to illuminate the entire wharf area while keeping glare off water surfaces and off competing fishers preparing their boats for early-morning launches.

The weigh-in and trophy presentation area is the ceremonial heart of the fishing classic. Competitors come to celebrate successful catches and be recognized for their achievement. This area required both bright functional illumination and celebratory stage lighting. We designed dynamic intelligent wash rigs that could shift from practical white competition lighting to colour-dynamic celebration lighting once the competitive component finished. Ceremony and celebration deserve genuinely engaging lighting environments.

The Malibu surfing competition requires waterfront viewing areas that allow spectators safe sightlines to the water. Beach and riverside areas need distributed lighting that ensures safety while creating minimal light pollution on the water. We used warm, diffuse lighting around spectator gathering zones, with minimal direct illumination of the water itself. The goal was functional safety without creating artificial brightness that affected water visibility or aquatic environments.

The broader festival gathering areas—food stalls, hospitality zones, merchandise areas—needed warm, inviting evening lighting. Evans Head's community has strong maritime heritage and working fishing culture; lighting design should reflect and honor that character. We used warm festoon overhead in hospitality zones and intelligent ambient lighting in gathering areas. The lighting created the atmosphere that encourages people to stay longer, spend more on food and entertainment, and actively participate in evening celebrations.

Live entertainment on waterfront stages needed dynamic stage wash lighting. Fishing festivals often feature maritime culture performances, local musicians, and community entertainment. Stage lighting needs to provide adequate performer visibility and colour-dynamic support without creating excessive glare that affects waterfront safety or fish-spotting visibility from the water.

The river precinct lighting required careful coordination. Evans Head sits on the Richmond River mouth; river traffic continues during festival hours. All waterfront lighting had to be designed so it didn't interfere with navigation lighting or create hazards for boats moving through the precinct. We coordinated with maritime authorities to ensure compliance.

Weather and salt-air durability were critical considerations. Coastal locations require equipment specifically designed for marine environments. We specified high-grade stainless steel fixtures, professional cable shielding, and regular maintenance protocols. Salt air is extremely corrosive; standard equipment wouldn't survive. Marine-grade equipment is non-negotiable for waterfront events.

Wind management on exposed coastal locations requires robust equipment positioning and securing. Evans Head's exposed coastline means frequent breeze and occasional significant wind. All equipment was secured and positioned to remain functional even in elevated wind conditions. Cable runs were protected to prevent hazards. Stability and safety were paramount.
