The Stanthorpe Apple & Grape Harvest Festival is one of the Granite Belt's most iconic celebrations—a genuine drawcard for visitors and locals alike. When Southern Downs Regional Council approached us about lighting design for the 2026 festival across Stanthorpe Showground and the town precinct, we jumped at it. This festival needed lighting that honoured the community's heritage while creating that magic that keeps people outdoors after dark.

Festival lighting at Stanthorpe requires careful planning. The showground hosts multiple simultaneous activities—food stalls, live entertainment, children's zones, craft displays—all needing different lighting atmospheres. We designed zones rather than uniform coverage. Warm festoon overhead creates a canopy effect around food and community spaces; intelligent washing lights transform the main stage area into an engaging, dynamic performance environment. The balance between functional safety and atmospheric delight is critical when families are attending.

The main festival marquee and outdoor bar areas are where warm, inviting lighting changes the entire guest experience. We used warm-white festoon strung at deliberate heights to create visual rhythm and intimate enclosure. Unlike harsh floodlighting, this approach encourages people to linger, enjoy the company, and spend longer on the festival site. Council benefits directly—longer dwell time means more secondary spending, better community engagement, stronger event attendance in future years.

The heritage apple and grape displays needed thoughtful feature lighting. Rather than aggressive spotlighting that flattens the exhibits, we used warm uplighting on specimen trees and subtle sidelighting on signage. The goal was to celebrate the produce and the region's heritage without visual fatigue. Visitors with cameras get genuinely compelling shots—social media amplifies word-of-mouth for future festivals.

Stage lighting for the live performance area required both aesthetic appeal and practical brightness. We installed a combination of stage wash and intelligent lighting that Council's AV team could control throughout the evening. Performers get adequate brightness and dynamic colour support; audiences aren't blinded by glare; the area reads as a genuine focal point rather than an afterthought. Professional stage lighting is what separates "nice community event" from "event people actually want to attend."

Power distribution across the showground required careful coordination with Council's electrical team and site manager. We used properly grounded and protected cable runs to keep the site safe while maintaining flexibility for different setup configurations. Backup power and dimming systems were positioned so Council staff could manage adjustments during the event if needed.

The children's activity zones needed reliable, safe lighting without creating harsh shadows or glare that affects visibility. We used softer, broader illumination in these areas so supervising adults could see clearly and kids could move safely between activities. Event safety is non-negotiable—proper lighting prevents trips, collisions, and anxiety for families.

Weather contingencies are real in the Granite Belt. We secured all rigging and equipment to handle wind, and positioned infrastructure to remain functional even if conditions deteriorated. The goal was always that the event runs successfully regardless of evening weather conditions.

Working with Southern Downs Regional Council meant understanding their event management processes, council compliance requirements, and community expectations. We provided full documentation of electrical specifications, equipment positioning, and operational procedures so Council could approve and manage the installation with confidence. This level of transparency and partnership is how public events succeed.
