Warwick Rodeo is one of regional Queensland's premier equestrian events—riders, families, and spectators from across the state converge on the Warwick Showground for one of the country's most competitive rodeo circuits. When Southern Downs Regional Council asked us to design lighting for the 2026 event, we knew we were lighting genuine sporting theatre. The rodeo needed professional-grade arena lighting that gives riders confidence and spectators a clear view, while the associated Jumpers & Jazz festival required atmosphere-rich evening lighting across the entire precinct.
Arena lighting for rodeo events is a distinct discipline. Riders need consistent, shadow-free illumination across the entire competition arena. Uneven lighting or glare creates safety hazards and affects competitor performance. We specified intelligent lighting rigs positioned to eliminate shadows while keeping light off the judges' line and spectator viewing areas. The goal is visibility without distraction—professional sporting lighting that makes the riders' skill immediately apparent.
Jumpers & Jazz happens alongside the rodeo, creating a genuine multi-venue festival across Warwick Showground. The live music stages, food and beverage areas, and merchandise zones all needed distinct lighting atmospheres. We used warm festoon overhead in the casual gathering spaces and dynamic intelligent washing on the performance stages. The contrast between intimate social lighting and energetic stage lighting creates natural zones that guide visitor flow and atmosphere.
High-volume events at regional showgrounds require distributed power and reliable backup systems. We coordinated with Council's electrical team to establish primary and secondary power feeds, ensuring that equipment could keep running even if a single source failed. Event contingency is critical—outdoor festival lighting can't simply stop mid-evening if something trips offline.
The equestrian nature of the event meant careful attention to animal welfare. We positioned equipment away from stabling areas, avoided rapid colour-strobing that could stress horses, and ensured that lighting didn't create unexpected shadows that might spook animals. These details matter enormously when livestock is part of the event environment.
Spectator comfort during evening competition requires proper light distribution. We used angled rigs that illuminate the arena without creating glare in the spectator seating areas. Poor spectator lighting ruins the viewing experience and makes photography difficult for families capturing memories. Professional event lighting serves everyone—competitors, spectators, and photographers equally.
The Jumpers & Jazz music program ran simultaneously with rodeo finals, requiring coordination so lighting didn't compete with the arena. Stage lighting for live music needs energy and dynamic colour support; arena lighting for competition needs consistency and safety. Both had to coexist without interfering with each other or with Council's event management operations.
Southern Downs Regional Council's event team needed complete operational control. We provided a centralised lighting control system that their AV staff could use to adjust intensity, colour, and focus throughout the evening. Real-time adjustments based on actual crowd conditions and event pacing are what separate scripted lighting from truly responsive event design.
Infrastructure security and wind management were significant considerations. Warwick's elevated location means occasional strong winds. All equipment was robustly secured, and cable runs were positioned and protected to prevent hazards. We worked with Council's site team to ensure safety compliance before the event even began.
Warwick Rodeo and Jumpers & Jazz is about celebrating regional sporting culture and community celebration. Lighting design amplifies both—it extends the rodeo into evening competition, creates inviting atmospheres for social gathering, and transforms a daytime sporting event into a genuinely memorable regional festival. That's the partnership we delivered with Southern Downs Regional Council.
