Working With Sunshine Coast Council

The Sunshine Coast Convention Centre hosts major council galas, corporate awards nights, and community celebrations. Most arrive with generic lighting rigs and a "make it bright" brief. We approached it differently: each event is unique, and the lighting should reflect that rather than defaulting to overly bright, characterless illumination. We installed a semi-permanent intelligent rig in the main ballroom: twelve intelligent LED fixtures networked on DMX, positioned to light the stage, audience, and perimeter without glare or hot spots. All fixtures were dimmed and colour-matched to a neutral warm white (3200K) as default, but capable of shifting to any colour temperature or dynamic colour for themed events. We also designed a secondary LED ground-wash system that could be programmed per-event: formal galas get warm, even uplighting; awards nights get cooler accent tones; community celebrations get warmer, more playful colour palettes. The genius was training the venue's own technical team to operate the system. We ran a two-day workshop covering basic DMX programming, colour theory, and safety protocols. By January 2026, the convention centre's operators could configure the entire rig in under 30 minutes for any event, without needing external technical support. That's the outcome: we didn't just light the room; we transferred the capability to the venue so they could run themselves sustainably. Sunshine Coast Council now markets "professional event lighting included" as a venue amenity, which differentiates them from competitors and attracts higher-end bookings.
