Candlelit tables are beautiful in theory. But real candles come with real risks: wax dripping on tablecloths, flames too close to florals or hair, fire safety concerns in enclosed marquees, and the need for someone to light and monitor 50–100 candles all night. Most venues now restrict or outright ban naked flames in marquees and enclosed spaces. The good news: battery-powered LED options are so convincing now that guests can't tell the difference, and they solve every practical problem real candles create.

LED candles and battery-powered lights look real now. Modern LED candles use warm (2700K) bulbs with flickering algorithms that mimic real flame movement. From two metres away, they're indistinguishable from real candles. They're safe to touch, won't melt wax, and burn for 30+ hours on a single battery. Costs run $2–8 per candle depending on quality and whether you're renting or buying. For a 100-person wedding with candles on every table, budget $200–400 for rental or $300–800 to purchase and repurpose.

Placement matters as much as the candles themselves. A single LED candle in the middle of a large floral centerpiece reads as lost. Three to five candles distributed around the centerpiece (nestled in greenery or at different heights within the arrangement) create visual impact. Candles at eye level (roughly 30–40cm high on the table) are safest and most visible. Avoid placing candles directly under overhanging branches or where they're at face height to seated guests—they're distracting even if they're not real.

Colour temperature: stick to warm white or flickering amber. Cool-white LED candles look artificial and undermine the romantic aesthetic. Warm white (2700K) is mandatory. Colour-changing candles (cycling through blues, purples, reds) are novelty items and feel cheap at real weddings. Solid warm white or realistic flickering amber are the only acceptable options.

Grouping candles creates more impact than spreading them thin. If you're trying to light 20 tables with limited candles, group them: three candles per table on alternate tables, skip, three candles on the next table. This creates visual rhythm and makes the lighting feel intentional rather than budget-constrained. Spreading one candle per table thin looks sparse.

Layering with other table lighting amplifies effect. Battery-powered LED candles are best as an accent layer, not the primary light source. Pair them with uplighting on the table (whether from below the arrangement or from a nearby fixture), fairy lights strung above, or spotlighting from the ceiling. The combination creates depth and dimensionality. Candles alone on a dark table make the table feel isolated; candles + layered ambient light make the table glow.

Battery management and contingency. If you're using 100+ battery-powered candles, have replacements on hand for any that run out mid-event (rare, but possible). Brief your venue or catering staff so they know candles are battery-powered and don't attempt to light them with actual flames. Store spare batteries and keep a charging station somewhere discreet so tech staff can swap batteries if needed.

Guest safety with LED candles. Unlike real candles, LED candles stay cool to the touch—completely safe even if guests brush against them. There's no wax dripping, no risk of burning, no fire hazard if someone accidentally bumps the table. This is huge for peace of mind. Marquee venues love LED candles for exactly this reason: all the ambiance, none of the liability.

Flickering algorithms affect perceived realism. Cheap LED candles have obvious, mechanical-looking flicker that reads as artificial. Quality LED candles have multi-step flicker that mimics real flame movement—occasional small flickers, rare large flickers, natural rhythm. The difference is noticeable and worth paying for. Test LED candles from multiple brands before committing to bulk orders.

Timing and setup logistics. Real candles need to be lit before guests arrive, which requires someone to visit every table with a lighter. LED candles just need batteries installed and switched on. No labour-intensive setup, no risk of someone missing a candle, no flames to monitor all night. Setup is simply turning on 100 switches—fast and foolproof.

Height variation prevents monotony. Mix candle heights on your tables so the effect isn't flat and uniform. Some candles in tall holders (10cm), others in standard holders (5cm), some nestled lower in arrangements (3cm). This variation creates visual interest and reads as more intentionally designed than uniform height across all tables.

Pairing LED candles with specific table designs. Candles work beautifully with minimalist, modern table designs (clean linens, sculptural arrangements, geometric shapes). They also shine in romantic, garden-inspired designs (overflowing florals, mixed greenery, vintage-style tablecloths). The same LED candles look dated in ultra-modern, all-white minimalist designs or in theatrical, heavily themed tables. Consider your overall table aesthetic when deciding on candles.

Rain and outdoor tables: waterproofing matters. If your tables are outdoors and rain is possible, ensure LED candles and batteries are weatherproof. Some battery-powered lights are sealed; others aren't. A sudden downpour shouldn't kill your table lighting. Discuss waterproofing with your rental company or purchase weather-sealed options if you're in an area with unpredictable weather.

Cost and rental vs. purchase decision. Renting 100 LED candles for a one-time event typically costs $200–400. Purchasing 100 candles and keeping them costs $300–800 and requires storage. For most brides, renting makes sense. If you love them and think you'll use them for future events or entertaining, purchasing is reasonable.

Photography and LED candlelight. LED candles photograph beautifully in close-ups and details shots. Photographers actually prefer them because they're predictable and don't create uneven shadows like real flames. Table detail shots show warm, inviting candlelit tables without any of the technical challenges real flames create.
