Local Guide

Choosing event lighting on the Gold Coast

The Gold Coast throws unique variables at event lighting — salt air, sea breezes, high-rise ballrooms and hinterland paddocks sometimes in the same wedding week. How to choose gear and a supplier that handles all of it, from locals who've lit the region for 10+ years.

Know Your Venue Type

Beachfront, ballroom or hinterland — each wants different lighting

Gold Coast events split into three venue personalities, and each rewards different lighting. Beachfront and park venues — Burleigh Heads, Coolangatta, the Broadwater — give you golden-hour views for free, so lighting should frame rather than fight them: festoon and fairy canopies that come alive at dusk, uplit palms and pandanus after dark. High-rise ballrooms in Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach are controlled boxes that take colour spectacularly — uplighting, feature pendants and programmed DMX looks shine here. Hinterland properties toward Currumbin Valley and the border ranges behave like Byron venues: big trees, no power, huge canopy potential and real working-at-heights installs. Our hire range covers all three, and after 10+ years we've lit most venues in the region at least once — tell us yours and we'll likely know the rigging points already.

Coastal Conditions

Salt, sea breeze and summer storms are the local exam

The Gold Coast is glorious and mildly hostile to electrical equipment. Salt air corrodes cheap fittings, the afternoon sea breeze arrives on schedule and tests every overhead rig, and summer storm cells build over the hinterland and hit the coast fast. This is where supplier choice genuinely matters: every fixture we run is IP64 waterproof — sealed against dust and rain — and tested and tagged, and our overhead installs use rated rigging, safety cables and wind-aware design as standard rather than as an upgrade. Ask any supplier you're comparing three questions: what's the IP rating of the gear, is everything tested and tagged, and who is certified for the working-at-heights install? If the answers wobble, keep shopping. Our event lighting checklist gives you the full list of questions worth asking.

Choosing A Supplier

Buy the service, not the box of lights

Plenty of Gold Coast hire shops will hand you a tub of festoon over a counter. What actually removes stress is the full service: design matched to your venue, delivery, professional installation, and packdown after the event — the model Lume Hire runs across the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Byron Bay and the Northern Rivers. Full-service costs more than counter hire and less than you'd guess, because DIY carries hidden costs: ladder hire, a mate's Saturday, the string that fails at 7pm with no backup on site. Local knowledge is the other quiet advantage — we know which Surfers Paradise ballrooms have rigging points, which beach parks council will and won't permit, and when the seabreeze means a marquee needs its festoon tensioned differently. Compare our wedding and corporate services, or just send the brief — quotes back within 24 hours.

Frequently asked

Yes — from Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach down through Burleigh Heads to Coolangatta, up to Logan and Brisbane, and inland to the hinterland. We also run the same service through Byron Bay and the Northern Rivers, so border-hopping weddings around Tweed Heads and Kingscliff are everyday work.

We light them regularly. Public parks and foreshores usually need a council permit for events, and lighting sits inside that approval — we supply the equipment documentation and safety paperwork your permit application needs.

The globes look similar; everything else differs. Commercial-grade festoon is IP64-rated, tested and tagged, dimmable and installed with rated rigging by an insured crew — and someone else does the ladder work and the midnight packdown. That's the actual product.

Within 24 hours, every time. Send the venue, date and a couple of inspiration photos through our contact page and you'll have a real number and a recommended design back the next day.
